The Power of a ‘Pause’

My Nurture Club coaching group have been focusing on a ‘Powerful Pause’ between our sessions. Just 5 minutes a day to sit in undisturbed silence and PAUSE. No phones, no writing the marvellous ideas, no judging thoughts, no trying to stop them – this isn’t a meditation! It’s 5 minutes of quiet in the day to stop and do nothing. It’s amazing in our fast paced lives and the ‘doing, doing, doing’ how rarely we stop. Put down all the things, get away from all the distractions, give ourselves to ourselves without fixing things for everyone else.
It’s a great idea to just do nothing and be. You may have heard the lightning strike ‘Human Beings NOT Human Doings’. I’ve heard it a few times and WOW – absolutely stopped me in my tracks. When did we stop just being and become consumed with doing? A Powerful Pause for 5 minutes every day might just remind you how little time you take to just BE and as some of our coaching group found, they are growing to absolutely love it and look forward to it!
It is also a great opportunity to just notice. Notice what’s coming up, notice the thoughts, and notice how your body is feeling. Avoid the temptation to scribble down your brainwaves or start a to-do list. You can do that once your 5 minutes is up if needed. Just get to know your thoughts and musing, get to know the feelings that arise, get to know the little signals your body is giving you. No judging, no shaming and certainly no blaming, purely notice.
It will get easier, and you may want to move it to a 10 minute practice. For some of you you’re going to find this incredibly difficult. 5 minutes is going to feel like eternity. You’re going to fight it and shout ‘whats the bloody point of this’. You, my friend, need this most. Sit with it, sit with YOU, and notice why it feels uncomfortable to be. No trying to fix either!
As you notice you’ll start to see some of the patterns in your thoughts that might be holding you back. Your thoughts are helping to shape your reality. The way you talk to yourself is providing you with the launchpad and the energy to create your actions. What do they sound like, what are you framing for yourself and what ingredients for your day to day living are you feeding yourself? Give it a go, 5 minutes every day in a ‘Powerful Pause’.
