Stop putting shiny windows into crumbling brickwork. Discover why building deep self-belief is more important than temporary confidence, and how to create a core foundation that holds up even when life hurls challenges your way.

In my coaching work I spend a lot of time talking about building self-belief.  My clients often want to get straight into talking about confidence and taking action.  It feels like putting brand new shiny windows into crumbling brickwork.  Yes, they look good for a while and they seem to keep the place a bit warmer and the rain out, and yet longer term the cracks start to show.

So why is self-belief so important in my personal development work?  Put simply, without it, you are like that crumbling brick work.  Your confidence will always ebb and flow depending on the circumstance.  Different places, different people and different tasks will make you feel like your smashing life one minute and blagging it the next.  Self-belief is the foundation.  It’s the bit that, if we take the time to build, holds up regardless of the situation.  Even when we aren’t 100% confident about facing life and its challenges, we have that core belief that everything will be ok because we can handle it.  We believe in ourselves, and we have what it takes to make the best of what life sends (or sometimes hurls with great force) our way.

How do you give that self-belief a boost then I hear you ask.  Let’s start with your language.  Notice how you talk to yourself.  Listen to the words you use.  Get focused on lifting that language.  Would you talk to your best friend that way?  No!  Well don’t allow yourself to speak to you like that either.  Think about the language you use, raise your awareness and then try to replace some of those ‘get out clause’ words with some more powerful ones.  Replacing BUT with AND is a great one.

I’ve been feeling ropey this last week with the dreaded lurgy.  I might say ‘I’m feeling crappy this week, but it’s ok I’ll catch up next week”. Now a more powerful language reframe. “I’m feeling crappy this week AND it’s ok I’ll catch up next week”.  Boom.  See the difference?

Have a go and let us know how you get on.  I believe in you. 😊
